The March of the Flag, by Albert Beveridge  On May 1st 1898 a U.S. naval task force destroyed the Spanish   pacific Fleet and seized control of the   Filipinos. Consequently, Spain ceded control of the Philippine territory in the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the war.
